Sedgwick County Commissioners held a special meeting Friday to formally approve the creation of a committee to look at new boundaries for the five commission districts.
Commissioners each appointed one member to the 15 member committee. The Sedgwick County Democratic and Republican parties will each choose five members.
The committee will look over ten possible maps that have been drawn for the five districts. They could recommend one of the maps or they could develop a new one under the guidance of county staff. The committee is expected to have a recommendation for the Commission by December 10th.
Commissioners want to get the map finalized by the end of December to allow candidates a chance to file by petition. Candidates would have 180 days to gather enough signatures, and they would have to begin collecting signatures in January to meet that deadline. Three county commission seats will be up for election in 2022.
