Police say a man remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition after being shot by a SWAT team officer during a standoff Sunday at a north Wichita home.

Police captain Jason Stephens said officers were called to a home Sunday morning at 9 on a report of a domestic violence incident in the 4800 block of North Seneca.  Officers were told that a man arrived on a motorcycle and then used an ax to break windows on two vehicles.   The man then left the home, but police went to his home in the 400 block of West 45th Street North, and they were told that the man pointed a handgun and threatened a family member.   Gunshots were heard and the man used an ax to damage windows on two more vehicles, then he locked himself in a shed in the back yard.

Police tried to talk the man into giving up, but he refused to respond to efforts to talk with him by telephone and by loudspeaker.    Officers saw him holding a handgun as he stood in an open doorway.   Negotiators were called to the scene around 10:30 a.m.   The man again refused to surrender and he was heard making threats to officers.   A SWAT team was called to the scene just before noon.

The man appeared at an open door and an officer fired a bean bag round at him, but the man went back into the shed.   SWAT team members continued to try to talk to the man but he continued to shout and make threats.   Shortly after 2 p.m., officers heard shots, then the man appeared in a doorway and fired shots at the SWAT officers.  The shots hit an armored vehicle and fragments rained down on one officer, but no officers were hurt.    One officer fired a shot, striking the man in the torso.  He was given EMS treatment and was then taken to a hospital.

Stephens said the officer who fired the shot has been placed on routine administrative leave.   The officer is a 28-year veteran of the Wichita Police Department.  The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called in to help with the case, and information will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Stephens said the suspect had been arrested for previous incidents in Park City and in McPherson County.
