Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors WWII Veteran Army Nurse Aurelia Escher.  Aurelia was in the middle of nursing training in Denver when the call for doctors and nurses to help the war effort in Europe came out.  She remembers a lot about her time their, including the incredible suffering.  She would tend to young men with horrible injuries, making them as comfortable as possible, sometimes simply holding a cigarette for them so they could smoke because they  couldn’t.  Those scenes have always stuck with her as well as the amazing feeling of celebration when the war ended.  Today, she encourages everyone to do your darndest to be kind, saying compassion and kindness are as relevant today as they were in 1944. Oh, and in November, she’ll be celebrating her 101st birthday.  Thank you for your message of kindness Aurelia and THANK YOU for your service.
