One of the most influential and successful artists in the history of country music is dead. Loretta Lynn passed away at the age of 90. Lynn was born in Kentucky in 1932, the second of eight children. She married Oliver “Doolittle” Lynn at the age of 15. Their often tumultuous marriage lasted 48 years until his death in 1996. But he encouraged her to sing and start her own band. Her first record, “Honky Tonk Girl” was released in 1960.

She quickly became well established in the country music scene in the 60s with such hits as “You Ain’t Woman Enough to Take My Man,” and “Fist City. ” Her song “Coal Miner’s Daughter” became the basis of a 1980 biographical movie starring Sissy Spacek. Her music often pushed the boundaries of the genre at the time with songs like “The Pill,” which was about birth control, and “Dear Uncle Sam,” during the height of the Vietnam War. She received numerous Grammys, Gold Records and other awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.
