Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach said Thursday he will be asking the Kansas Sentencing Commission to create stronger sentences for people who distribute drugs, if a death results.

The issue is one of several priorities that Kobach said he would lobby for during this year’s session of the Kansas Legislature.   He also said his office will be providing maximum resources to county prosecutors who are handling cases involving fentanyl.    He said the epidemic in fentanyl trafficking and the resulting deaths must be addressed and those who are responsible must be held accountable.

Kobach also wants action on organized theft rings, which will steal items from businesses through theft or fraud and then sell them online or in other marketplaces.    He is asking legislators to create a task force focused on organized retail crime.

Kobach also said he will be introducing legislation to prohibit foreign ownership of land in Kansas.  He also wants to eliminate the fee charged by the Attorney General’s office for obtaining a concealed carry license.
