Mississippi Tornado Kills At Least 23 People, Dozens Injured, Several Missing

At least 23 people are dead in Mississippi with dozens more injured following a tornado outbreak Friday.

Dozens of buildings were also destroyed and at least 4 people are still missing. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said local and state search and rescue teams were deployed to help victims impacted by the tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service, the tornado caused damage about 60 miles northeast of Jackson, Mississippi, causing extensive damage in the rural towns of Silver City and especially Rolling Fork. The twister moved northeast at 70 mph toward Alabama through Winona and Amory.

The Sharkey County Sheriff’s Office in Rolling Fork reported residents trapped in rubble along with multiple gas leaks. Some law enforcement personnel were also unaccounted for.

Roughly 40,000 customers lost power in Tennessee, with an estimated 15,000 customers without power in Mississippi, and 20,000 more in Alabama.

Earlier in the day on Friday, torrential rainfall in Wright County, Missouri caused flooding that killed at least two people who were in a car that was swept away by high water. Another person was missing Webster County, Missouri hit by flash floods.
