A City of Kansas City, Missouri employee is out of a job over a tweet targeting Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas confirmed yesterday that the employee who sent a tweet on May 15th about Butker’s city of residence has been fired.

The tweet was sent following Butker’s commencement speech at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, earlier this month covered topics including the roles of women in society.

The speech has drawn controversy, and some considered his comments sexist and homophobic.  Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has spoken in defense of Butker. In a news conference Wednesday, Mahomes said he didn’t necessarily agree with Butker, but defended his character. The quarterback said he’s known Butker for seven years and that he’s a good person who cares about the people around him.

The NFL has distanced itself from Butker’s comments, and said his opinions are not those of the NFL.
