The Greater Wichita Officials Association hosted a High School Referee basketball Clinic during this weekend's Mid-America Youth Basketball Summer Kickoff Tournament in Wichita.
55 new and semi-experienced basketball referees received "on-court" training from over 70 Veteran officials during the tournament, along with attending classroom sessions.
Francine Martin, Assistant Executive Director of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, says the number of basketball officials have decreased over the last 7 to 8 years, but Kansas officials have remained steady.
She says more basketball referees are needed as more schools are added.
More Referees are getting out of officiating than are getting in. Two reasons for the decline: Retirement of veteran officials and less-experienced referees no longer wanting to deal with the verbal abuse from fans.
