Cold Weather Rule goes into effect November 1

Customers can avoid utility disconnections

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Cold Weather Rule goes into effect November 1.

Between November 1 and March 31, utility customers behind on their bills can avoid having utilities turned off when temperatures drop below 35 degrees for a 24 hour period.  Utility companies are also required to offer a 12-month payment plan to allow consumers to maintain or re-establish utility service.

Any residential customer with a past due balance will qualify for payment arrangements under the rule.  However, they must contact the utility company to make the payment arrangements.
