Dexter Betts facing a felony charge

WICHITA, Kan. - A former Wichita Police officer has been charged in connection to a shooting incident late last year that injured a 9-year-old girl.

It happened on December 30th in the 1500 block of North Gentry, near 13th and Hillside.  Wichita Police responded to the report of a domestic disturbance with a suicidal person with a gun.

Former officer Dexter Betts was one of the responding officers.  Betts reportedly entered the home to secure a handgun that was believed to be inside.

Police said at the time that Betts fired at a dog in the house that was allegedly charging at him.  The shot missed and struck the floor, where the bullet broke apart.

A bullet fragment struck a 9-year-old girl in the forehead.  Her injuries were not life-threatening.

After an investigation, Betts was fired on January 25.  On March 20th, he was charged with felony aggravated battery.

A first appearance hearing is scheduled for April 11.
