WICHITA, Kan. - A former Wichita Police officer has been charged in connection to a shooting incident late last year that injured a 9-year-old girl.
It happened on December 30th in the 1500 block of North Gentry, near 13th and Hillside. Wichita Police responded to the report of a domestic disturbance with a suicidal person with a gun.
Former officer Dexter Betts was one of the responding officers. Betts reportedly entered the home to secure a handgun that was believed to be inside.
Police said at the time that Betts fired at a dog in the house that was allegedly charging at him. The shot missed and struck the floor, where the bullet broke apart.
A bullet fragment struck a 9-year-old girl in the forehead. Her injuries were not life-threatening.
After an investigation, Betts was fired on January 25. On March 20th, he was charged with felony aggravated battery.
A first appearance hearing is scheduled for April 11.
