Judge orders hearing on Barber County video

Family wants body camera footage released

MEDICINE LODGE, Kan - A judge in Barber County has ordered a hearing to determine if the sheriff's office violated the state open records law.

The family of 42-year-old Steven Myers wants body camera footage released from the confrontation that led to his death.  Myers died after being hit with a bean bag round on October 6th in Sun City.

Myers' widow, Kristina, has filed a lawsuit alleging excessive force against Barber County sheriff Lonnie Small and undersheriff Virgil Brewer.   The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Myers was not complying with commands from officers.
