Kansas agencies warn against storm repair scams

BBB, Attorney General give tips on avoiding scams

WICHITA, Kan. - Severe thunderstorms caused damage across Kansas Tuesday. Major flooding hit northwest Kansas, tornadoes were reported in Gray and Ford Counties in western Kansas, and large hail smashed windows in Sedgwick County.

If you're hiring someone to fix hail damage, the Better Business Bureau says you should make sure that contractor is reputable, local, and professional.

The Kansas Attorney General says you should not just hire the first contractor who comes to your door. The A.G.'s office encourages you to:

  • Get recommendations and references
  • Get at least three written estimates from different contractors
  • Check contractor complaint records with the Better Business Bureau
  • Understand your payment options and right to cancel

The Attorney General also advises you not to pay more than a third of the money up front, and make sure you have a signed contract.

You can find a list of contractors in good standing with the state on the attorney general's website.
