Kobach faces criticism over fake gun in parade

Kobach Touts Second Amendment in Face of Criticism

Shawnee, KS - Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is facing criticism after riding in the Old Shawnee Days parade Saturday with a replica gun atop his Jeep.

The Kansas City Star reports the sight of Kobach was met with shock by the Shawnee crowd. Shawnee Community Christian Church Pastor, Johnny Lewis, says he heard audible gasps from people in the crowd.

In a statement, Kobach, a Republican candidate for Kansas Governor, says, "Those who use the excuse of school violence to restrict the right to bear arms are deeply misguided. We need to stand up for our Second Amendment rights and recognize the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

The City of Shawnee issued a statement apologizing to anyone who felt unsafe by Kobach's ride through the parade. The City has promised it won't happen again.

Kobach is currently running as a Republican candidate for Kansas Governor.
