WICHITA, Kan. - Some people using Kansas' food assistance program can now use EBT cards instead of paper checks.
A pilot program in Shawnee County allowed people in the WIC program to use the cards, and it was successful enough that Sedgwick County decided to start offering the cards on March 7. The cards can be used with a smartphone app that lets users keep track of their balance, and scan a food's barcode to find if it can be used with the WIC program.
Switching to cards is expected to make things easier for people in the WIC program, and for cashiers that help them.
Counties across Kansas will start offering the eWIC program in phases over the next few moths. The whole state should be participating by the end of August.
