Undersheriff charged in Barber County death

A man died after being hit with a bean bag round

MEDICINE LODGE, Kan - The Kansas Attorney General's Office has filed a criminal charge of involuntary manslaughter against the Barber County undersheriff. 

60-year-old Virgil "Dusty" Brewer was charged in an indictment filed Wednesday by the attorney general's office in Barber County district court.   He was arrested at the Barber County courthouse in Medicine Lodge and then booked into jail. 

Brewer is charged in the October 6, 2017 shooting of 42-year-old Steven Myers near Sun City.   Myers was hit with a beanbag round that was fired at close range during a confrontation. 

Bond was set at $15,000 and Brewer is not allowed to be involved in any law enforcement activity while the case is pending.  He is scheduled for a first appearance on Friday, September 7th.
