Wichita Sniper up for parole in July

Board heard testimony Wednesday against release

WICHITA, Kan. - The Kansas Prisoner Review Board was in Derby Wednesday to hear from the public about whether or not they should release Michael Soles when he is up for parole in July.

On August 11, 1976, Soles climbed to the the top of the Holiday Inn in downtown Wichita, now known as 250 Douglas Place.  Soles opened fire with two rifles, killing 3 and inuring 8.

Former Sedgwick County Sheriff Mike Hill shot Soles, ending his rampage.  Hill testified Wednesday against paroling Soles.

He was joined by retired Wichita Police Officer Michael McKenna who was there that day, along with current Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett, all who requested Soles remain locked up.  Relatives of Soles' victims were also in attendance.

The review board will meet with Soles within the next month.  They will then deliberate for up to a month before making a final decision.
