WICHITA, Kan. - Speaking at a Wichita Regional Chamber of Commerce meeting Thursday, Mayor Jeff Longwell announced the city is looking at bringing in an affiliated baseball team.
Longwell said a team owner has been to Wichita and has met with city leaders. A specific team could not be mentioned, but Longwell says he may be able to provide more information after the MLB Winter Meetings are over. Major League Baseball has to approve the deal before it can go forward.
The city has not had an affiliated team since the Wichita Wranglers left in 2007.
Longwell said an affiliated team would help with a plan to reconstruct Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The city plans to use STAR Bonds, supported by sales tax revenues, to finance that project.
