The man convicted in the 2006 murder of a Wichita teenager has filed an appeal of his conviction for capital murder, rape, aggravated kidnapping and other charges.
32-year-old Elgin Ray Robinson was convicted in the murder of 14-year-old Chelsea Brooks. Prosecutors said Robinson hired two men to kidnap and kill Brooks because she was pregnant and he didn’t want to go to jail for rape. Robinson was given life without parole, plus 247 months in the case, and the convictions were affirmed later in an appeal to the Kansas Supreme Court.
Robinson’s attorneys filed an appeal in 2015 asking for discovery of evidence regarding the credibility of the police detective in the case, under the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the “Brady and Giglio” case. That appeal was denied, but attorneys have filed a follow-up appeal. Arguments will be heard on December 11th in Topeka.
Kansas governor Jeff Colyer denied parole last June for 29-year-old Everett Gentry, who was sentenced to 25 years to life for Chelsea’s murder. 61-year-old Ted Burnett was sentenced to life without parole.
