A teenager was hospitalized in Nebraska after a chase and shootout with law enforcement officers in northern Kansas.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said a 66-year-old woman called 911 Saturday morning to report that she had been restrained, beaten and strangled at a home in Smith Center.  She was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover.

The teen suspect tried to get away on horseback, and Smith County deputies chased him for several hours as Kansas Highway Patrol troopers joined the search.   The KBI said the teen fired at troopers and he was hit when they returned fire.  The 15-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in Kearney, Nebraska where he underwent surgery, and there was no update on his condition.

No law enforcement officers were hurt during the chase and shootout.   The KBI is investigating.
