A Wichita man is charged with pointing a laser at a Kansas Highway Patrol plane.

The pilot was flying over south Wichita on December 15, to help with a chase, when he reported being hit with a green laser. The light was tracked to a home in the 1100 block of South Terrace, near Lincoln and Oliver. Police arrested the 29-year-old suspect, who was found in a car behind the home.

Pointing a laser at a plane is a felony, and could lead to a 5-year prison sentence and quarter-million-dollar fine.

The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office have been pushing to highlight the dangers of pointing lasers at planes. There is potential to blind and disorient pilots, which could lead to a crash.
