Some employees at Wichita State University have had direct deposit payroll information stolen in a phishing email scam, and money has been taken from their accounts.  That’s according to a report in the university’s student newspaper, The Sunflower, which quoted an email sent to WSU staff members Wednesday.

The email was sent by WSU associate vice president Lois Tatro, who said that employees clicked on a link in a realistic email that they received, and they entered their personal ID and password. That gave the hacker access to personal information that included bank accounts, addresses and student records.  Some employees had their direct deposit payroll diverted to another account.

WSU employees were urged to check their bank account information and change their passwords immediately.   They’re also being reminded to never respond to an email with a link asking for their employee ID and credentials.

In a press release issued late Thursday, the university said it has notified the FBI of the scam, and it reported that three employees were affected.
