Suspect in south Wichita chase is now in jail

A 35-year-old Wichita man has been released from the hospital and he is now in jail after being shot by a deputy during a chase late Tuesday night.

Sedgwick County sheriff Jeff Easter said a deputy tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation at Hydraulic and Scott around 11:20 p.m.    The pickup refused to stop and led deputies and Wichita police officers on a 12-minute chase.

Easter said the pickup ran over stop sticks at Hydraulic and Clark and two of its tires were deflated, but it continued to go north.  Deputies used their vehicles to perform tactical moves to stop the pickup, but the driver managed to speed away and almost hit a deputy after a second attempt was made to stop the pickup.    The truck was then going west on Pawnee in the eastbound lanes, forcing vehicles onto the curb to avoid being hit.   A third attempt was made by deputies to stop the truck at Pawnee and Laura, and the driver again tried to speed away and rammed a patrol car. The chase reached speeds of 40 to 50 miles an hour.

Easter said a deputy fired several shots into the windshield of the pickup, and the driver was removed.  The driver was taken to a hospital to be treated for grazing wounds to his head and left arm, and he was later released.  He is now in the Sedgwick County jail for driving while suspended, aggravated battery, reckless driving and a number of other charges.    He also had warrants for traffic offenses and failure to appear in a felony case.

Easter said no law enforcement officers were hurt during the chase.   The deputy who fired the shots is 43 years old, and has been a patrol deputy for ten years, with a total of 19 years of law enforcement experience.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will be working with the sheriff’s office on the case.
