South Wichita shooting victim identified, suspect arrested

Police report a shooting at a south Wichita motel appeared to have started as an argument over drugs.

Justin Gaston was found shot Sunday night, at the Citi Host motel, near 43rd South and Broadway. A person who called 911 tried to help Gaston, but he died before help arrived.

A 31-year-old suspect was identified and arrested Monday night, in the 700 block of North Westridge. He was booked into jail on a first-degree murder charge.

According to police, the victim and suspect were passengers in a car that was driven into the motel parking lot. Police say the men started arguing and Gaston was shot as he got out of the car. That car had been reported stolen and was later found on fire. Police got in touch with the car’s owner, and say that’s what led to the suspect’s arrest.

The person driving the car is identified as a 34-year-old woman. She has not been arrested so far, but police say that could change as their investigation continues.
