Tanganyika Park Welcomes Second Baby Pygmy Hippo

The second pygmy hippo ever to be born in Kansas was welcomed on Thursday, April 11th at Tanganyika Park. The new baby boy is named Yeti. He weighed 13.4 pounds at birth, but was up to 18.6 pounds after the first week. Parents Posie and Pluto parented a baby girl pygmy hippo two years ago and this is their second offspring together. In 2008, pygmy hippos were placed on the endangered species list and in 2014, a study determined the age structure of the captive population was unhealthy. “As one of the most successful breeding facilities in the world, we are working to make a difference for pygmy hippos,” Assistant Park Director Matt Fouts said. The new baby won’t be available for additional photos or viewings for a few weeks, but information and updates can be found on the Tanganyika Park’s social media pages.
