Tornado Rips Through Kansas City Area

Officials say three people in Douglas County, west of Kansas City, Kansas, were seriously injured by a strong tornado that struck near the college town of Lawrence.

The tornado touched down Tuesday night in a neighborhood south of Lawrence, which is home to the University of Kansas. More than a dozen homes were severely damaged, but no one was killed.

The Douglas County Emergency Management agency said Wednesday on Facebook that 15 people were injured by the storm, including the three with serious injuries. It warned people to stay away from storm-damaged areas.

The Red Cross opened a shelter in Lawrence, KS area the tornado touched down in the area. The shelter opened at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night and is located at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Building 21 (2120 Harper Street, Lawrence, KS 66046). Individuals and families displaced from their home are urged to come to a shelter where they will be provided a safe place to stay and sleep, hot meals, and referrals to community services.

On Monday, the U.S. tied its current record of 11 consecutive days with at least eight tornadoes on each of those days, said Patrick Marsh, warning coordination meteorologist for the federal Storm Prediction Center. The previous 11-day stretch of at least eight tornadoes per day ended on June 7, 1980.  So far this year, 38 people have died in 10 tornadoes in the United States, including a combined seven within the last week in Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma and Ohio.
