Deputy Robert Kunze to receive posthumous award from National Sheriff’s Association

Deputy Robert Kunze is receiving a posthumous award from the National Sheriff’s Association.

Kunze died in the line of duty on September 16, 2018 while trying to apprehend a suspect who was armed with a stolen handgun.  Kunze exchanged gunfire with the suspect and was fatally wounded in the process.

On Monday, June 17, Kunze’s family will receive the National Sheriff’s Association’s Deputy Sheriff of the Year for Valor on his behalf.  The award is given each year to a deputy who has made outstanding contributions to law enforcement and his/her agency or who has demonstrated conspicuous bravery in the performance of his/her duties.

The award is given in memory of Allen County Indiana Sheriff Bud Meeks, who was a previous Executive Director of the National Sheriffs’ Association.  The award will be presented to Kunze’s family during the association’s annual conference which will be held in Louisville, Kentucky.
