Star Spangled Salute: An Iraq War Veteran Makes History for His Bravery

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Iraq War veteran Army Staff Sgt. David G. Bellavia.  On November 10th, 2004 David was squad leader during Operation Phantom Fury, an American offensive on the western Iraqi city of Fallujah.  His entire squad was pinned down by enemy fire that day.  David exchanged gun fire, entered the house, engaged the insurgents and provided cover fire for a safe exit.  Then, when an armored Bradley Fighting Vehicle was out of position to fire on the house, David went back into the building to neutralize the threat of rocket propelled grenades being fired from the house. It’s for his bravery that day that David will become the first living Medal of Honor recipient for the war in Iraq.  He will join the President for a ceremony on the 25th of this month.  Congratulations David and thank you for your service.
