Straight line winds blamed for weekend storm damage in Derby

The National Weather Service said straight line winds caused damage in southern Sedgwick County early Sunday.

Tornado warnings were issued for Sedgwick, Sumner, Butler and Cowley counties as radar indicated rotation in storms that were moving through the area, but there were no confirmed reports of any tornadoes.

Warning coordination meteorologist Chance Hayes said damage was found along a path from near Peck to Derby.  There was substantial tree damage, some homes had heavy damage northwest of Peck.   A roof was taken off a building in Derby and homes had damage from fallen trees, but Hayes said it wasn’t the typical type of damage that would be caused by a tornado.   The wind estimates ranged from 75 to 95 miles an hour, but there was no confirmation of reports that winds reached 111 miles an hour.

Hayes said it’s important for people to have multiple ways to get weather information.  In the case of a severe storm that moves through in the middle of the night or in the early morning hours, he said a weather radio might be the only device that can wake them up.
