Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Navy veteran H. Ross Perot. Often described as colorful, H. Ross Perot was a self-made Texas billionaire who twice ran for president as a third-party candidate. In fact, his 19% of the vote in 1992 was the best showing by an independent in the past century. As a boy, he delivered news papers from the back of a pony, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy and earned his billions starting with sales at IBM and eventually developing EDS, Electronic Data Systems. What you may not know is in 1979 he financed a private commando raid to free two EDS employees who were being held in a prison in Iran. That story became a book and a TV mini-series called “On Wings of Eagles”. H. Ross Perot died yesterday after fighting Leukemia at the age of 89. Thank you for your service.
