Aftershocks rattle Hutchinson area

Aftershocks have rattled the Hutchinson area following Friday’s magnitude 4.2 earthquake.

The initial quake shattered windows, knocked items off of shelves, knocked down ceiling tiles, and led to cracked walls and doors that would not open at some businesses and homes in Hutchinson.  The area has also been experiencing aftershocks, though well below the threshold of quakes that can cause damage.

The first happened 10 minutes after the initial earthquake and measured 3.1 in magnitude.  It was followed by a 2.6 30 minutes after initial earthquake.

There was a 2.7 magnitude aftershock recorded about 15 minutes later.  A  2.5 magnitude aftershock was recorded at 3 p.m., a  3.0 at 8 p.m.

Finally, a 2.8 magnitude aftershock was recorded around 5 a.m. Saturday.  There have been no reports of additional damage.
