WPD officers pull shoplifting suspect from pond

A 16-year-old girl is hospitalized in critical condition after being pulled from a pond Thursday night.

Wichita police say she was with a male and the two were suspected of shoplifting from a store in the 6900 block of West Kellogg around 9:30 Thursday night. Security at Kohl’s reported the two left with $1000 worth of clothes, but dropped them as they were confronted.  As officers tried to catch up to the pair the female ran into a pond. Police say she got to the middle and said she couldn’t swim. Officers jumped in to help her after she went underwater and couldn’t be seen.

The teen was unconscious when she was found and the officers were able to get her to the shore. She was revived and taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Both officers who went into the water became violently sick afterward. It’s believed this was due to bacteria in the pond. Both officers were hospitalized but have since been released.

The male suspect got away and hasn’t been found. It’s believed another woman in a car was also involved. Police say this group had recently stolen clothing from the Kohl’s in east Wichita too.
