Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors veteran Sgt. James Ernest Smith Jr. of Sedgwick. James was a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was reported missing in action on Nov. 25, 1950. Following the war, several returning prisoners of war reported that James had died in January of 1951 a prisoner of war. Now, close to 70 years later, his remains have been identified, and he’ll be coming home where he’ll receive a military funeral and be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Come on home James and thank you for your service and sacrifice.
