If you’re still using the iPhone 5, you need to make sure your operating system is up to date.
Starting just before 6 p.m. Central Daylight Time on November 3, you will need to be using iOS version 10.3.4 in order to still use GPS, App Store, iCloud, email, and web browsing. It’s due to the GPS time rollover issue that began affecting GPS-enabled products from other manufacturers on April 6, 2019.
The Global Positioning System broadcasts a date and a weekly counter, which is stored in only 10 binary digits 0-1023. That means it has to reset to zero to start the count over.
That reset happens every 19.7 years. Devices that have already been programmed to handle that switch will not have any issues.
However, the latest rollover happened in April of this year, causing problems for some devices. The iPhone 5 was not affected until now.
