The Sedgwick County Republican Party is calling on a Kansas House member from Wichita to resign, after reports that he was involved in an attack ad against a candidate in the Wichita mayor’s race.

Michael Capps represents the 85th District in Wichita, and he was elected to office in 2018.   Media reports have linked Capps to an ad and a false YouTube video that tied mayoral candidate Brandon Whipple, a Democrat, to allegations of sexual misconduct in the Statehouse.

Whipple has filed a lawsuit against Matthew Colborn, who was Capps’ campaign manager, and two people identified as “John Doe Number One” and John Doe Number Two.”

The county Republican Party issued a statement on Facebook:

From day one, the Sedgwick County Republican Party has been clear that gutter politics will not be tolerated within our local party. We have always advocated that we win on the issues.

Over the last couple weeks, the Wichita mayoral race has been hijacked by some of the dirtiest politics we have seen in some time. An ad produced that falsely linked a local candidate to an inappropriate and disgusting claim surfaced. This ad represents all that is wrong in politics. Politics is about ideas, advancing those ideas through public discourse, and serving those in our communities.

Rep. Michael Capps, through various companies he owns, has been linked by investigative reports to be behind this attack. As a Republican Party, we will not tolerate these kind of acts. We are calling for a resignation of Michael Capps from public office. Our leaders need to lead by example.

The SCRP will be donating all money received from Rep. Michael Capps to ICTSOS. They are a local organization that strives to better our community through building people up, not tearing them down. We also ask all local Republican affiliate groups to join us in donating any contributions received from Mr. Capps. This sends a strong signal that the Republican Party stands united against dirty politics.
