House passes USMCA trade deal

The house has passed the USMCA trade deal between the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The deal, which replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), overwhelmingly passed the house on a 385-41 vote.  KFDI News spoke with Kansas Congressman Dr. Roger Marshall by telephone immediately following Thursday’s vote.

“Whether you’re making airplanes in Wichita or growing wheat in Seward County, this is going to be a good thing for Kansas.” says Marshall.  “Most importantly, it’s going to add thousands of jobs in Kansas and grow our exports by several hundred million dollars.”

Among the changes from its NAFTA predecessor, the new trade deal would give US farmers greater access to Canada’s markets.  It also has provisions that require a higher percentage of cars be made from parts built in the United States and that at least 40% of autoworkers receive a minimum pay of $16 an hour.

It also has provisions for dealing with e-commerce, something that didn’t exist when NAFTA was signed into law over two decades ago.  The bill moves onto the Senate where it is not expected to be taken up for debate until early next year.
