Fire and rescue crews were sent to the Textron-Beechcraft plant in east Wichita after an explosion in one of the buildings.

A nitrogen line and tank reportedly exploded shortly after 8 a.m. Friday, and the blast destroyed part of a building and injured more than a dozen people.

Webb was closed south of Central as firefighters moved into the area. Drivers were asked to avoid the area as emergency crews worked at the scene.

First responders say 11 people were taken to a hospital to get checked out.  Late reports had one person in critical condition and three others listed as serious, and the rest were treated and released.    Four other people were treated at the scene.

Textron said this happened in Plant 3, which handles composite manufacturing and experimental aircraft fabrication. The plant was closed so only minimal staff were around when the blast occurred.   The company said all employees, contractors and visitors have been accounted for.
