Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism donates Elk and Bison meat to food banks

The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism has donated Elk and Bison meat to Kansas food banks to be distributed to those in need across the state.

The meat came from elk and bison herds managed at the Maxwell Wildlife Refuge in Canton and the Sandsage Bison Range near Garden City.  Each year, the KDWPT harvests several bison and elk to help maintain herd sizes.

2,137 pounds were collected and divided into five pound boxes.  Each box contains around 20 quarter pound patties.

Employees with the department distributed 400 boxes to food banks across the state.  The meat is expected to feed around 8,500 people in Kansas.
