Sedgwick County will add new position to work on diversity, equity

Sedgwick County will be creating a new position to work on issues relating to diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Diversity and Inclusion Officer will promote and provide opportunities for county employees to feel valued, respected and heard, according to county manager Tom Stolz. He said the position will enhance recruitment, hiring and promotion of a diverse staff.

Stolz said diversity is one of the goals of a strategic plan for the county, but with recent civil unrest across the U.S., he believes it’s time to move ahead with the hiring of a diversity officer.

When the position is filled, Stolz said the officer will be working with the Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney and other county departments to look over policies and procedures and work on innovative ideas for better training and business practices.  He said the new position is one way the county can promote diversity, inclusion and equity for the community and for the county organization.

Stolz expects the salary for the officer to be around $107,000 a year, and he is suggesting that it could be funded with contingency funds for this year, and there could be changes in the staffing table to make room for this position.
