Wichita man arrested for kidnapping attempt

A 62-year-old Wichita man is facing attempted kidnapping and solicitation charges.

Officers were called to the QiukTrip, at Broadway and Kellong, around 4:50 p.m. on Sunday. They talked to a 10-year-old boy at the store who reported he’d been walking nearby, when the 62-year-old made sexual comments and grabbed him by the arm. The child was able to pull away and ran to the QuikTrip for help.

The suspect was identified and found at his apartment a few blocks to the west, in the 800 block of South Water. Police arrested the man without incident.

Anyone who has more information on this case is asked to call police at 268-4407, or Crime Stopper at 267-2111.

Wichita police are commending the 10-year-old boy for taking action to escape and get help. Police offered to following advice to help keep your kids safe.

·       Speak about safety issues;

·       Practice what you talk about;

·       Teach children it is better to get out of a dangerous situation than be polite;

·       Children tell a trusted adult before you go anywhere; and

·       If possible, don’t walk alone but with a friend or a trusted person.

The District Attorney’s Office will decide on charges in this case. Police say this man has been previously convicted of indecent solicitation of a child, criminal threat, and theft.  He is also a registered sex offender.
