Sedgwick County jail reports COVID-19 cases

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that 22 inmates in the county jail have tested positive for the coronavirus after a couple of initial cases were reported earlier this month.

Undersheriff Brian White said 49 inmates were tested because they may have had contact with another inmate who tested positive.  That resulted in 22 inmates testing positive, and they are in medical isolation along with the original inmate who was confirmed to have the virus.  A total of 27 inmates are in quarantine under the guidance of state health officials and the onsite medical provider in the jail.

White said seven deputies were tested, and those results were negative, and he said no staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.  He credits that to the health precautions that jail staff have been taking.
