Sedgwick County Zoo loses another giraffe

The Sedgwick County Zoo has had to say goodbye to a second giraffe in less than a month’s time.

Lois, a 22-year-old reticulated giraffe, had to be euthanized Thursday after veterinarians found a cancerous mass in her jaw.   Zoo officials said Lois had been showing signs of illness and her condition grew worse despite treatment.   Doctors felt that because of her age and the signs of illness, Lois could not be treated successfully for the cancer.

Lois was born in 1998 at the Buffalo Zoo and she arrived at the Sedgwick County Zoo the following year.   She had three calves, and one of them currently lives at the Zoo.

The Zoo had to euthanize Twiga, a 26-year-old reticulated giraffe, in July because of chronic ailments.   She had given birth to five calves during her residency at the Zoo.
