A 51-year-old man was killed Monday evening when a piece of equipment fell on him in a rural area near Haysville.
Emergency crews were called to the 1600 block of East 87th Street South, in Salem Township just southeast of Haysville. Crews got to the scene shortly before 8:30 p.m. and found a man unconscious in the back yard of a home. Sheriff’s lieutenant Tim Myers said Shane Shafer was working with his two teenage sons to move a large press brake from a flatbed trailer. The press brake fell from the trailer and pinned Shafer to the ground. His sons and a neighbor used jacks to lift the press brake and they were able to remove him before deputies arrived. Shafer was pronounced dead at the scene.
