Kansas legislative leaders, acting as the State Finance Council, have voted to extend an emergency disaster declaration for 30 days for the coronavirus pandemic.

The Council met Friday and decided to extend the declaration through October 15th.   Language was included in the motion to declare that Governor Laura Kelly is not planning another mass shutdown.

Governor Kelly said Thursday that she would ask for an extension.  She said it is needed to allow the state to access federal assistance and to provide needed help for Kansans during the pandemic.

Sedgwick County district attorney Marc Bennett and Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said the extension would also allow the court system to deal with a backlog of cases that has built up since March.
