The Wichita Police Department is raising awareness about the dangers of strangulation in domestic violence situations.

Wichita Police Chief, Gordon Ramsay, says strangulations are underreported, and sometimes do not leave marks that are immediately visible. Strangulations may also cause blood clots that can lead to serious medical conditions days after an attack.

In an effort to help people get out of dangerous situations, the WPD has put together information and resources that can help in a variety of ways. If you are not in a violent relationship yourself, but know someone who is, you are encouraged to take advantage of the following resources too.

  • Sedgwick County, 911;
  • Harbor House Domestic Violence Shelter, 263-6000;
  • Wichita Family Crisis Center, 267-7233;
  • Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center, 263-3002;
  • StepStone, 265-1611;
  • or The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233

The WPD put the following page together that focuses on strangulations in particular. It includes forms that can help someone document and report a strangulation, along with warning signs of serious injuries.
