Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Navy Veteran LaKendra Mackey. LaKendra served 10 years in the Navy. Her return to civilian life was hard. She experienced homelessness, PTSD and was rasing 6 kids, one with special needs. Born from this struggle was her desire to help so she went to school to become a social worker. As a first generation student she needed help and she got it from an organization called TRIO. LaKendra is now the first of her family to go to and graduate college and she’s hoping to help others, including her kids, reach their goals and dreams, despite the obstacles.
