Investigation continues on Wichita bank robbery leading to officer-involved shooting

Wichita police have released the name of the man who was shot and killed by an officer during a chase that followed the robbery of a credit union Monday afternoon.

Police said 50-year-old Paul Peraza was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident at 13th and Webb Road.   Police said he was driving a Toyota Tundra pickup that was reported stolen on December 14th.

Police said cash was taken from the Golden Plains Credit Union at Webb Road and Corporate Hills Drive.  A weapon was not seen during the robbery but police said employees feared for their safety.   An officer saw the pickup going north on Webb Road after the robbery and tried to stop it.  The truck sped north and then turned east at 13th, striking an SUV that was stopped at a red light.  The truck then backed into a patrol car and the officer fired shots.  The truck then went forward and struck a car that was also stopped at the intersection.

Police said Peraza was convicted in 1996 of a bank robbery in California.  On December 10th, he was arrested by Wichita police for being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of illegal weapons, drug charges and auto theft.   A federal probation violation warrant had been issued for Peraza on December 14th.

The FBI and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are looking into the chase and shooting.  The officer who fired shots is a nine-year veteran of the department and he is assigned to the Patrol East Bureau.  He has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard in officer-involved shootings.

Police showed dash camera video segments from the chase during a news conference Tuesday.
