Star Spangled Salute: Wichita Veteran Celebrates Her 100th Birthday Today

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors World War II Veteran and Wichita Native Staff Sergeant Katie Conkling.  Katie is a 1939 graduate of East High School.  After school she was going to look for work in Wisconsin but instead was called to join the Women’s Army Corps.  Sworn in just 9 months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Katie found herself stationed at Hickam Field Hawaii and remembers in detail caring for wounded soldiers. After her military career Katie married a B-26 pilot and had two children.  Katie went on to be a pilot herself, a braille transcriber and later picked up bee keeping.  Katie has always believed her military career gave her a good foundation and thinks everyone should experience it.  Well, today is Katie’s 100th Birthday so Happy Birthday Katie and THANK YOU for your service.
