A detention deputy at the Sedgwick County jail has been arrested on charges of smuggling contraband items, including cell phones and marijuana, into the jail.

The deputy has also been accused of neglect of an inmate.   He has been with the Sheriff’s Office since June of 2019, and he is now on unpaid suspension.

Sheriff Jeff Easter said information was received last week about contraband in the jail.  He said investigators have recovered four cell phones in the last couple of weeks, along with the synthetic drug K-2, marijuana, a cell phone charger, tobacco and lighters.

Easter said more interviews will be conducted before information is presented to the District Attorney’s Office for the filing of charges.

The sheriff said drug smuggling into the jail had been interrupted in December when two people were arrested for putting liquid K-2 onto pieces of paper and mailing them to inmates in the jail.    That led the Sheriff’s Office to make changes in the way mail was handled in the jail.
