Star Spangled Salute: The Veteran Who Lived In The Stadium

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Vietnam Veteran and former Green Beret, Tom Garvey.  Tom has been in the news recently because he revealed he was a homeless Veteran who lived in a secret 20 by 60 room behind a left field concessions stand in Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia before it was torn down. Tom worked for his Uncle who was contracted out to work concessions and the parking lot back in the late 70’s and early 80’s.  Since Tom was there all the time, nobody noticed that he had a small apartment in the stadium with a fridge, coffee pot and other simple comforts.  He often would throw secret parties there too.  Shortly after living in the stadium ended, Tom married and wrote a couple of books including “The Secret Apartment:  Vet Stadium, a Surreal Memoir”.  Thank you for a great story Tom and THANK YOU for your service.
