The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has offered the COVID-19 vaccine to inmates in the county jail, and more than 400 have received it.
The Sheriff’s Office said Monday that the first dose of the Moderna vaccine was offered to about 1,150 inmates and 418 accepted the vaccine, for a vaccination rate of 36 percent. The jail’s onside medical provider went to every inmate housing unit to provide information to inmates on the vaccine. The provider will help in scheduling and administering the second Moderna shot as needed.
The Sheriff’s Office said all inmates booked into the jail will have the opportunity to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, if they haven’t received it already. Incoming inmates are still being placed in quarantine areas before moving to the general population. Inmates are tested based on screenings or reports of symptoms, and if necessary, the inmates are medically isolated .
The jail is continuing sanitization standards that include the use of extra soap and disinfectant. All staff members have been issued masks to wear and all inmates have been issued face coverings.
